this page is for stuff about me and things that i do to keep - cool js :)
dumb phone
so one of my main ways to stay off socials and texting is to use a dumb phone. What is a dumbphone?
It's just a phone without the capabilties of a smart phone. It's void of apps like Instagram, WhatsApp,
Twitter. The only use is alarms, SMS, and calling. This may seem like an extreme method, but it's been
very enjoyable. After about a week you stop caring for all the socials and notification dinging and get
immersed into your work.
The phone i first used was a 3310 3G. It served the initial purpose of really making it impossible to access
socials and youtube. After a bit, i switched to a smart but still dumbphone. The iPhone 5S was a way I could
stay on WhatsApp and texting but still not have the temptation of socials. The phone was too small and slow
to
use anything else.
hand held timers
everyone has heard of pomodoro or timeblocking. The former being a version of the latter with a smaller
block
of time. Everyone's go to timer is on their phone. While this is convenient, i find it a gateway to
distraction.
Once the timer is done, you can see your notifications. Personally, I may find myself getting sidetracked
within
that span of 30 secs (im weak). So, I use a hand held timer. It's a cheap buy of amazon and it gets the job
done.
I can't get distracted by my phone.
breaks during study sessions
another way some people take breaks is by going on their phone. I find this to be a bad idea. It's too easy
to gets
sucked into a point of no return. Once that infinte scroll starts, it's hard to stop. Some ways I take
breaks include...
- Grabbing a snack
- washing up
- reading a small paragraph in my book
- anything other than going on my phone
getting off the "productivity" section on youtube
while a lot of the tips are useful most of the videos are just clickbaiting you. Majoirty of what productivity
youtubers say is commonly known knowledge to you. I can bet majority of students already know to get enough
sleep,
but they don't becuase maybe they're procrastinating or maybe they are working dilgently but not efficiently. In
this
case, it's not productivty or motivation tips you need. You need to learn how to study correctly. Someone who
knows how
to study correctly will be able to get the same amount of work done in less time. This leaves more time for
other things
like sleep, exercise, and hobbies. One youtuber i do recommend is
Justin
Sung.
idea dumping
I find myself getting distracted by ideas. I'll be working on a project and then I'll get another
idea. Or i'll be reading a book and all the important points will be lost because I'm thinking about something
else.
A good way to combat this and "remeber" everything is to keep what philosophers and logicians call a commonplace
book. If you find something you wanna remember just jot it down. It can be a quote, a thought, a question, or an
idea.
Just jot it down. Comeback to it fresh. Free up some brain space.
why a simple site?
this is a personal opinion. A portfolio site is supposed to be a quit intro to the person. Some may argue that
it's
a good way to both showcase skills and yourself. But most of the time, you put too much time into the portfolio
site
and forget about other projects. Also, the old simple look is oddly aesthetic to me :)
